Omkareshwar- One of Shiva’s twelve most sacred Jyotirlinga shrines is Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. It is located in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, India, on Mandhata Island in the Narmada River. The island’s shape is thought to resemble the holy Hindu symbol “Om” (ॐ), hence the name “Omkareshwar”. This location is noteworthy not just for its historical significance and natural beauty, but also for its spiritual significance.
Hindu mythology claims that Omkareshwar has a deep spiritual history. There was once a tremendous conflict between the Danavas (demons) and the Devas (gods), according to legend. In response to the Devas’ prayers for assistance, Lord Shiva took the form of Omkareshwar and gave them the victory. An other tradition describes the sage Narada, who, satisfied with his dedication, received a blessing from Lord Shiva and took the form of Omkareshwar.
Omkareshwar (whose name is derived from “Om”) and Amareshwar (another name for Shiva, meaning “Lord of the Immortals”) are the two principal temples on the island. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is special because it is divided into two sections: Amareshwar (or Mamleshwar) and Omkareshwar itself. Together, these two parts are regarded as a single Jyotirlinga.
Mandhata Island- The island’s distinctive shape, which resembles the holy symbol “Om” (ॐ), makes it a popular tourist destination. The Narmada River and the surrounding scenery can be seen from beautiful walks around the island. The Parikrama, or circumambulation, is another well-liked activity there.
Siddhanath Temple- The magnificent architectural design and fine craftsmanship of this temple are well-known. It is an important location for both followers and lovers of architecture. The terrace of the temple offers a wide-angle view of the Narmada River.
Narmada River- A big draw is the river itself. A peaceful experience, boating on the Narmada offers beautiful views of the island and its temples. One of the main components of the pilgrimage is the boat voyage to the temple.
Ahilya Ghat- This ghat, which bears the name Ahilyabai Holkar after the renowned queen, is a lovely spot to unwind and enjoy the views of the Narmada River. It serves as a location for ceremonies and rituals as well.
